AUGMENTED REALITY & VIRTUAL REALITY
1. One example each of hospitality/tourism use of AR and VR
- Augmented reality: example of the Hotel Holiday Inn, the Official Hotel Provider to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It has featuring a host of Britain's top athletes:
- Britain's best ever windsurfer Nick Dempsey 'windsurfing' in a bedroom with a bed sheet
- four times BMX World Champion Shanaze Reade performing tricks on her bike in the lobby
- world number one Will Bayley hitting table tennis balls behind reception
- UK long-jump record holder Chris Tomlinson jumping in a corridor.
- Virtual reality: Qantas, Hamilton Island and Samsung have partnered to create a unique VR experience showing one of Australia's most famous holiday destinations. It is a revolutionary three dimensional, 360 degree Virtual Tourism experience.
2. Explain the difference between AR +
VR as a customer experience.
Augmented Reality
|
Virtual Reality
|
- A mix of real & virtual world
- It lets people interact with real & virtual worlds while clearly
distinguishing both
- Tool needed: a smartphone in front of the customer
|
- Creates an entire virtual world
- - Both worlds are hard to differentiate
- Tool needed: helmet

3. What type of businesses/organization can best benefit
from AR or VR - for what purpose?
Travel & tourism, hospitality and event are
the main industries that can best benefit from AR or VR. Indeed, these are all
industries where the customer has to imagine, to project himself before buying
a service. For instance, it is essential for a customer who wants to organize a
big event and who is not able to visit the place to see it virtually. Indeed,
seeing things from the business point of view, it is easier to sell a
particular space and a particular location by showing real images.
4. Your opinion based on your research - Fad or real tool? Be prepared to support your position.
I think that it is a great technology that can allow a lot of positive evolvements in a lot of industries (travel & hospitality as I explained earlier) but also some fundamental industries such as the medical industry.
In fact, I deeply think that this technology is going to expand in our daily lives. It is not a fad, it is a real tool that will be largely widespread used.
